Salaam,

One of the main international ladies organizations that I had the opportunity to join as a member (and later on as a committee member and deputy treasurer) is the Diplomatic Ladies Group (DLG) Tehran. Its members consist of spouses of diplomats assigned in Tehran.

The group strives to associate women from different parts of the world, provides community based support and a permanently available friendly network to the spouses of diplomatic personnel posted in Tehran. It offers an informal meeting space, a readymade set of group activities, practical information about Tehran city and Iran, and most significantly, it opens avenues for every newcomer to Tehran to make suitable friendships.

In fulfilling its social functions, DLG is committed to assist disadvantaged sections of the society in Iran. Apart from organizing lectures and tours, members of the group also routinely organize charity events, like coffee mornings, music concerts, bazaars, raffles, etc. where the collected amount is duly presented to Iranian charity organizations.

On February 20, 2006, I had the honor to host one of the DLG monthly gatherings – DLG Coffee Morning, at our residence in Tehran. The distinguished guest of honor was Mme. Mottaki, wife of the honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, accompanied by other spouses of senior officials of the ministry and members of the Iranian Diplomatic Group, as well as members of DLG Tehran.

The program began with an introduction from the then DLG President, Mme. Datin Sharifah Ikhlas of Malaysia to welcome the distinguished guest of honor, followed by the hostess’s short remark of welcome and appreciation.

Special program of the day was a presentation and demonstration by Ms Leila Yavari, Iranian Fashion Consultant and Designer and Hair Dressing Expert (London-trained IT specialist and Event Coordinator) on the subject of the correct use and application of make-up with a volunteer-model.
The gathering then adjourned for a buffet of a vast array of dishes, including examples of Brunei specialities.

Wassalam…
